I am the Director of Member and Professional Development at Hawaiʻi Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations (HANO), the state association of nonprofits in Hawaiʻi. I direct the Weinberg Fellows program, a management program that builds the capacity of Executive Directors of nonprofits that serve the neediest in our community. I also direct the Hawaiʻi Nonprofit Board Leadership Institute – a training program for individuals seeking to join a nonprofit board or new to a nonprofit board. This program was developed to support the nonprofit sector by increasing the pool of nonprofit-knowledgeable board members eligible to serve Hawaii’s nonprofit organizations.
I plan, deliver and evaluate training and consulting services, working with internal staff as well as external consultants in the field to provide professional, affordable services to nonprofits of all sizes and in all stages of development. My areas of training and consulting expertise include board governance, nonprofit management, outcomes, proposal writing and planning facilitation.
I have a bachelor’s degree in Art History from the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa and did graduate work at Tufts University in Museum Administration and Museum Education. I have additional training in Collaborative Leadership, Facilitating Strategic Thinking and Planning and Appreciative Inquiry and am a certified MBTI® (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) practitioner.
Working at the state association of nonprofits, I have the privilege of being connected to nonprofits of all missions, and sizes statewide and see their missions in action on a regular basis. This helps me to have a broad and deep understanding of what is common and what is unique among nonprofit organizations.
My philosophy as a trainer is that each of our participants comes with unique skills and talents. My job is to facilitate them sharing those skills and talents with each other and provide context, a best practices framework and information that enables them to learn and grow in the way that is most beneficial to them, individually, and to their organizations.
In my consulting work, I believe that each client knows the right answer for them. I am there to create a space where all ideas and voices can be heard – to provide and facilitate a process for the client and their constituents to find that answer.
